The Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER), Universiti Brunei Darussalam has officially launched the “Hornbills of Brunei Darussalam” poster on 17th March 2022 in commemoration of World Wildlife Day held on 3rd March 2022 with the theme of “Recovering key species for ecosystem restoration”.

The objective of the “Hornbills of Brunei Darussalam” poster is to highlight the eight hornbill species found in Brunei, in efforts to increase awareness and conservation of the species, especially the key species, the critically endangered Helmeted Hornbill (Rhinoplax vigil).

The poster production is an output from Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s ongoing research project titled “Distribution and Ecology of Hornbill species in Brunei Darussalam”. This project is a collaboration between UBD, Mandai Nature Singapore, Birdlife International, United Arab Emirates University with funding from Universiti Brunei Darussalam and Mandai Nature Singapore. The poster was produced in collaboration with BruWILD.

The launching ceremony was officiated by the Guest of Honour, Associate Professor Dr Abby Tan, Assistant Vice Chancellor of Research (UBD), and attended by senior government officials from Forestry Department and Tourism Development Department of Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, Brunei Shell Petroleum Co. Sdn. Bhd, collaborators from BruWILD, BirdLife International, Mandai Nature, and United Arab Emirates University and other invited guests.

Posted @withregram • @peatswamp.iber In Brunei Darussalam, Peat Swamp Forest is the second largest forest type in the country (Wong & Kamariah, 1999), covering an area of 90, 000 ha which is equivalent to 16% of the total land area (Wong et al., 2015). It occurs mostly near low-altitude coastal areas (Page et. al, 2011) and is characterized as ombrotrophic in nature (Anderson, 1964; Page et al., 2006). A large area of PSF in Brunei is situated in the Belait District and is part of the Baram/Belait peat dome, the peatland that is shared between Sarawak and Brunei (Anderson, 1964; Anderson & Marsden, 1984). Small patches of PSF can also be found in Tutong and Temburong District (Wong & Kamariah, 1999), although according to Anderson and Marsden (1984), those found in the Temburong district located adjacent to the mangroves in the Labu forest reserve are relatively new. 📸: Surin Kumar #ubdiber #ubd #iber #bruneiforest #peatswampforest

Sadly due to COVID, we couldn't be physically together 😔 Despite this, we still managed to make connections with the students from Universiti Brunei Darussalam through the breakout room sessions!

The past 3 days have definitely been very enriching, with many interesting topics covered during the lectures and sharings. The few stories shared by students about their personal experiences were also entertaining and gave us all a good laugh in between lessons 😊

TREx 2021 ✅

🍃 Tropical Research Experience (TREx) is a 14-day programme that includes lectures, workshops, and educational visits as well as conducting field research work at Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre (KBFSC). It is the first field programme that is organized by IBER, with the support from UBD.

🍃 This year’s TREx took place from 9 to 22 June 2021, participated by professionals from various backgrounds.

🍃 A total of 47 volunteers participated during the 4-day event. Volunteers consisted of members of the public, UBD staff and students, as well as representatives from BSP and Wetlands International.

🍃 Positive updates from the research team too! Majority of the saplings planted in last February are doing well, with several saplings showing encouraging signs of new leaf production.
