In conjunction with the holy month of Ramadhan, this week we feature fruits mentioned in the Quran and Hadith. The fruits featured here include dates, pomegranates, grapes, figs, lemons, bananas, and watermelons.

In the Quran, fruits are referenced in several verses, highlighting their significance as blessings, divine providence, and mercy. Dates are mentioned more than 20 times in the Quran, reflecting their importance not just for sustenance but also for healing, as cited in Surah Maryam 19:25-26. Grapes are mentioned 11 times, often alongside other fruits. These fruits not only provide sustenance for mankind but also showcase the wonders of divine creation and craftsmanship.

A few of the featured fruits can also be found in the living collections at the UBD Botanical Research Centre’s Al-Hadeeqah Al-Mubaarakah zone.

Excited to present the 'Waterbirds of Brunei Darussalam' poster to the Wildlife Division, Forestry Department, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism! The poster was received by the Deputy Director, Tuan Hj Mardani Hj Mahadi.

This initiative is part of IBER's outreach efforts to raise awareness about biodiversity conservation.

Black-winged stilts (Himantopus himantopus). These are very long-legged wading birds. They are found in both warm and hot climates, feed on small aquatic creatures (aquatic insects, molluscs etc.) and nest on the ground surface in small colonies. They are mostly found in coastal areas and paddy fields.

In conjunction with the holy month of Ramadhan, our featured plant this week is Aloe vera, one of the plants cited in the Hadith.

Aloe vera is known for its medicinal properties and have been used for centuries to treat burns, skin irritation, and even gastrointestinal disorders. Its gel contains vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that promote healing, soothe inflammation, and improve digestion.

The annual market of aloe vera is valued at billions of US dollars, and is one of the important historical trade routes between Asia and the Mediterranean (Silk Road). Aloe vera holds a significant place in certain communities and also contributes to their economies.

Celebrating Women in Biodiversity!

Today, March 8, 2025, is International Women’s Day. On this day, we honour their invaluable contributions to conservation, scientific discovery, and academia.

Women have played a crucial role in biodiversity research and conservation, contributing to scientific discoveries, policy-making, and community-driven initiatives. From leading research on ecosystems and species protection to advocating for sustainable practices, women's involvement has been at the forefront of efforts to protect our natural resources for future generations.

This year’s theme is "Accelerate Action," and it calls for us to celebrate women's successes and to support women, such as in leadership, decision-making, and STEM. This should include supporting women in biodiversity conservation, where women continue to play pivotal roles in sustainable resource management and environmental guardianship.

We hope this post will inspire more young women to continue the biodiversity conservation efforts and lead the next generation of ecological guardians.

Botanical Tidbits 🌿

Psst... Did you know? During our visit to Rimba Ilmu Botanic Garden at Universiti Malaysia, we stumbled upon an impressive wild jambu tree known as Syzygium gratum (synonym: Syzygium antisepticum), towering at up to 34 meters tall! Its striking copper-red bark is papery and flaky, peeling away on its own to fend off pests.

In southern Thailand, the young shoots and leaves are a tasty treat, enjoyed raw or blanched for their slightly sweet and sour flavor. Plus, these leaves have medicinal benefits, used to treat sprains (as a poultice), bruises, edema, and poor digestion, and they even demonstrate potential cytotoxic effects against cancer cell lines.

In conjunction with the holy month of Ramadhan, our featured plant this week is Ziziphus mauritiana.

Ziziphus mauritiana is commonly known as ber, Indian jujube, Malay apple, Cottony Jujube, Apple Siam, Bidara, Bidara Cina. The plant is characterised by its small spines and drooping branches and bears edible fruits.

In the Quran, Ziziphus mauritiana is mentioned several times, one of which is in Surah An-Najm 53: verse 12-18.

The seeds, leaves, fruits, stem and roots have demonstrated a wide spectrum of pharmacological activities. Because of the numerous therapeutic benefits, this plant is widely used in Islamic medicine for healing and valued for its spiritual and medicinal qualities.

On 26th February 2025, our UBD BRC staff attended a workshop on orchid propagation techniques, organised by the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood under the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) in conjunction with Brunei Darussalam's 41st National Day. The workshop was facilitated by Mr Md Azman bin Haji Mohd Janah.

From 14–25 February 2025, the Institute for Biod

From 14–25 February 2025, the Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER), UBD, welcomed researchers from The Botanical Gardens, Graduate School of Science, The University of Tokyo. The look-see research visit, led by Professor Atsushi Kawakita, Director of the Botanical Gardens, brought together a team specializing in plant-pollinator interactions across various species. Hosting the visit on behalf of IBER were UBD BRC Curator, Associate Professor Dr. Rahayu Sukri, and IBER Assistant Lecturer, Dr Salwana Md Jaafar.

The look-see research visit focused on exploratory fieldwork in Brunei’s biodiverse forests and included visits to the Sungai Liang Tropical Biodiversity Centre and the Brunei National Herbarium. The team focused on plant-pollinator interactions in species such as Rubroshorea albida, Glochidion, Pandanus, Hoya, and Oberonia, aiming to uncover unique plant-insect interactions and deepen our understanding of rainforest ecology. Discussions are now underway between the UBD Botanical Research Centre and the University of Tokyo Botanical Gardens on impactful projects on plant-pollinator interactions and on collaborative initiatives between the two botanic gardens.

We look forward to future collaborations and exciting discoveries! Stay tuned for more updates on our research initiatives.

This morning, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) participated in the National Day Celebration Assembly, held at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar 'Ali Saifuddien in the capital.

IBER was represented by Dr. Salwa Khalid, who joined the UBD team. We are proud to be part of this grand celebration.

Let's hear from Ms Syarfa Haziqah binti Johar from BruWILD, an NGO that focuses on biodiversity conservation. She is one of the participants in the National Workshop on Capacity Building for Waterbird and Wetland Monitoring.

The workshop is hosted by the UBD’s Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (KBFSC), in collaboration with the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity and Singapore's National Parks Board, supported by the Japan-ASEAN Intergration Fund, and endorsed by the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe).
