Get to know our plants in UBD campus!

This plant is commonly known as crepe myrtle but scientifically known as Lagerstroemia indica. It can be seen near the UBD mosque.

It is a popular ornamental tree due to its beautiful flowers and low maintenance. It requires hot summer in order to flower successfully. Thus, it was no surprise when it bloomed profusely in the UBD campus earlier this year during the pronounced dry season.

Dr Salwa Khalid successfully attended the ASEAN Fl

Dr Salwa Khalid successfully attended the ASEAN Flyway Network Training Workshop on Wetland and Migratory Waterbird Management from 19 to 23 August online and 2 to 6 September at the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve (SBWR), Singapore.

The workshop included lectures, field work, presentations, as well as field visits to SBWR wetlands, Lim Chu Kang Nature Park, Centre for Wildlife Forensics, Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation, and Mandai Mangrove and Mudflat.

Many thanks to the organizers - ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB), National Parks Board (Nparks), SBWR, ASEAN Flyway Network (AFN), East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP). The workshop was funded by Japan-ASEAN Intergration Funds (JAIF).

We are pleased to share the latest publication co-authored by Dr Salwana Md. Jaafar from IBER and her colleague from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Dr Mohamad Hilmi Ibrahim. This study investigated the influence of seasonal precipitation variability and forest maturity on ion deposition patterns in rehabilitated forest ecosystems in Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia.

Using ion exchange resin (IER) samplers, the research examines the deposition of ions (Ca²⁺, Na⁺, Fe²⁺, Cu²⁺, NO₃⁻, NH₄⁺, and SO₄²⁻) across different seasons and forest ages. The results show that Ca²⁺ and NH₄⁺ deposition decreases in low-precipitation seasons, while other ions like Na⁺, Fe²⁺, Cu²⁺, NO₃⁻, and SO₄²⁻ do not exhibit clear seasonal patterns. Recent forest stands have higher concentrations of Ca²⁺, and varying levels of Na⁺ and SO₄²⁻ depending on precipitation.

This study offers valuable insights into how precipitation and forest age affect nutrient dynamics, contributing to better understanding of the nutrient dynamics in lowland tropical rainforests in the region.

We are excited to announce the release of a new publication by our recently graduated MSc student, Mohamad Farid bin Abdullah, and his supervisors from IBER, Associate Professor Dr Rahayu Sukri, Dr Norhayati Ahmad and Dr Salwana Md Jaafar.

This comprehensive review on distribution and diversity of the palm genus, Pinanga, across Southeast Asia, offers fresh insights into how these diverse palms adapt to various environmental conditions in tropical forests. The paper discussed factors such as litter depth, canopy openness, soil properties, and microclimate that impact the distribution and abundance of Pinanga species. It also highlights conservation challenges faced by these palms, emphasizing the need for more detailed research and effective conservation strategies to combat threats faced by Pinanga palms in the wild.

This publication represents a significant advancement in our understanding of Pinanga palms and provides valuable information for future research and conservation efforts.

Throwback. This photo was taken when His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws by Universiti Malaya (UM) in 1992.

His Majesty is seen planting Dryobalanops aromatica (locally known as kapur) to mark his visit. The tree has been growing well next to the Dewan Tunku Canselor in UM.

We thank UM's Emeritus Prof Dato Haji Mohamed bin Abdul Majid for sharing this timeless photo.

To raise awareness on biodiversity, Dr Roslinawati Mohd Roslan from the UBD's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE) exhibited a number of IBER posters on Brunei's flora and fauna including the plants that can be found at the UBD Botanical Research Centre (UBD BRC). The posters were exhibited at the Science Exhibition held at Kagawa in Japan.

We thank Dr Rosalinawati for introducing Brunei's biodiversity to our Japanese friends.

Dr. Roshanizah Rosli (IBER) published a paper titl

Dr. Roshanizah Rosli (IBER) published a paper titled “Ecophysiological responses of native and introduced coastal tree species parasitized by Cassytha filiformis in Brunei” in Plant-Environment Interactions, co-authored with Dr. Faizah Metali (FOS) and Dr. Kushan Tennakoon (Federation University, Australia).

This study investigates the impact of parasitism by C. filiformis on the ecophysiology of both native and introduced hosts in the threatened heath forests of Brunei. It particularly explores the effects of elevated CO₂ and light levels on infected and uninfected hosts, focusing on gas exchange, mineral nutrients, and secondary bioactive compounds in host-parasite relationships.

The findings indicate that the hemiparasitic vine depends on its hosts for photosynthetic efficiency and nutrient acquisition, however, parasitism did not significantly impair the ecophysiological performance of the infected hosts, suggesting potential coexistence between the hosts and C. filiformis.

This study offers critical ecophysiological insights for future research on how C. filiformis may establish itself without adversely affecting cohabiting native hosts.

This publication is one of the outcomes of her PhD work on Cassytha filiformis at the Environmental & Life Sciences Programme, Faculty of Science, UBD

We’re thrilled to share that Dr. Salwana Md. Jaafar and Ms. Nurul Hazlina Zaini from IBER proudly represented Universiti Brunei Darussalam at the 8GBGC in Singapore from August 5th to 10th, 2024! As the only participants from Brunei, they showcased exciting research on ex-situ conservation of Brunei’s native tree species and tree diversity studies at the UBD Botanical Research Centre.

The Global Botanic Gardens Congress is the premier global event for botanic gardens, fostering knowledge sharing and collaboration. This year’s congress, the first ever in Southeast Asia, was a huge success thanks to the efforts of the co-organisers, Singapore Botanic Gardens and Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI).

The UBD Botanical Research Centre is a proud member of BGCI and is the only botanic garden within the BGCI network that is located in the rare Bornean heath, or Kerangas forest.

A big thank you to the organizers and all participants for making this event a milestone in global conservation efforts! Let’s continue to work together to protect our planet’s precious flora

The Asian langurs (Presbytis) Conservation Action

The Asian langurs (Presbytis) Conservation Action Plan 2024-2034 is the first ever genus action plan outlining strategies to protect 20 langur species across Southeast Asia. A total of 31 experts and conservationists from 23 institutions around the world, including Dr Salwa Khalid from IBER, developed the action plan for the endangered group of Asian monkeys.

The action plan was developed following a conservation planning workshop held in August 2023 in Kuching, Malaysia. During the workshop, the 31 primate experts and conservation practitioners convened to identify existing gaps and threat levels, and outlined the corresponding conservation actions needed to mitigate or reverse the decline of langur population.

In conjunction with the launch of the Asian langurs (Presbytis) Conservation Action Plan 2024-2034, an international “Colobine Monkey Day” has been established on 25 August. Officially endorsed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), this day aims to raise conservation awareness for colobine monkeys (Colobinae), a sub-family of primates that includes all Asian langurs, African colobus monkeys and snub-nosed monkeys.

Colobine monkeys are medium-sized, largely arboreal primates known for their complex, multi-chambered stomach which enables them to digest tough plant material such as leaves and seeds.

Found commonly in gardens and fields, these assassins are masters of patience, waiting for their prey to approach. While they typically target small flying insects, they're not afraid to take down larger prey like medium-sized caterpillars.

The IBER team's visit to Rimba Ilmu at Universiti Malaya included an extensive tour of the Rimba Ilmu gardens and outdoor areas, immersing us in the beauty and diversity of the natural environment of the garden. We explored the insightful Rainforest and Our Environment Exhibition and visited the Rare Plants and Orchid Conservatory, which houses an impressive collection of unique and rare species. The tour concluded with an in-depth look at the Herbarium, featuring an extensive array of preserved plant specimens vital for research and conservation.

We extend our sincere gratitude to our hosts especially to Dr. Yong Kien-Thai and his team from Rimba Ilmu Botanic Garden for providing such an enriching and informative experience. We look forward to reciprocating the hospitality and fostering future collaborations!

A paper on the phytochemical content, antioxidant,

A paper on the phytochemical content, antioxidant, anti-diabetic and wound healing activities of Curculigo latifolia from Brunei Darussalam was recently published in the Scientific World Journal.

The paper was a research project conducted by graduate student, Amanina Yusrina Taufik from the Faculty of Science (FOS) under the supervision of Dr Fairuzeta Jaafar (FOS), Dr Hartini Yasin (FOS) and Dr Norhayati Ahmad (IBER) in collaboration with Professor Masayoshi Arai of the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Osaka University, Japan.

The paper describes the investigation of the phytochemical content, antioxidant, anti-diabetic and wound healing properties of the medicinal plant, Curculigo latifolia.

The outcomes of the study adds on to our existing knowledge on the potential healing properties of local medicinal plants attributed to the presence of the different bioactive compounds.
