They are in fact the juvenile nymphs of a family of planthoppers belonging to the family Flatidae. Like all other planthoppers, they suck phloem sap of plants. Some species are known to communicate with vibrations through the plant stems. They also have a symbiotic association with ants that tend the nymphs, protecting them and gathering honeydew secretions.

“The fascinating world of ferns in Brunei” was “The fascinating world of ferns in Brunei” was the title of the IBER Seminar Series delivered by Professor Dato Haji Mohamed bin Abdul Majid, Emeritus Professor and Honorary Advisor, Rimba Ilmu Botanical Gardens, Universiti Malaya on the 26th September 2023. The seminar shared on the importance of ferns in the local culture as medicines, ornamentals and also consumed as food. Borneo being a biodiversity hotspot is estimated to have at least 850 species of ferns where studies on these ferns remain largely unexplored.

This IBER seminar is part of a series of events related to the launching of the Ferntastic Brunei book and fern poster.

The seminar was also attended by members from Forestry Department, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, UBD staff and students as well as members from BruWILD.

Members of the UBD Botanical Research Centre (UBD Members of the UBD Botanical Research Centre (UBD BRC) conducted a sharing session on 6 September 2023. Ms Nurul Hazlina Haji Zaini, Botanist at the UBD BRC underwent a training under the Staff Mobility Training Program in June 2023. The program was funded by the ERASMUS+ (EuRopean Community Action Scheme for Mobility of University Student plus) and was also joined by two UBD Masters students hosted by Dr Martin Dancak from Department of Ecology, Faculty of Science, Palacky University at Czech Republic. This training was made possible as part of the ongoing collaborations between IBER and Palacky University. The training was for a period of three weeks and aimed to offer an integrated program providing more opportunities and mobility of staff, learners, and collaborations across education, youth, and training.

In July 2023, Mohammad Amiruddin bin Ruslan and Soon Boon Yu, both Assistant Curators and Botanists at UBD BRC attended the 'EERace 26', or Environmental Education 26 organized by Rainforest Discovery Centre & Forestry Department Sabah, Sabah Education Department and Sabah Environmental Education Network in Sandakan, Malaysia. In line with Heart of Borneo Initiative, the objective of EERace26 was to get to know about the environment through experiential learning as well as to learn about community involvement in conservation practices, wildlife restoration and resource management.
