Flagging off the next generation of Bruneian sustainability champions!

We’re excited to kick off The Nature Camp, an immersive environmental education programme sponsored by Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP), taking place from 2-6 December 2024 at the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre (KBFSC). This initiative is designed to deepen participants' understanding of Brunei’s tropical rainforests and biodiversity, while fostering awareness of global environmental challenges like climate change. The flag off event was attended by BSP’s Acting Communication & External Affairs Manager, Muhammad Haziq Abdullah Lim and BSP representatives, held at IBER on 2nd December 2024 before the 13 Nature Campers depart to KBFSC.

A big thank you to BSP for their unwavering support in cultivating environmental stewardship and developing future leaders.

Join us for an insightful online webinar on Hornbill Habitats in Borneo, organised by the IUCN Helmeted Hornbill Working Group (HHWG), featuring Dr. Salwa Khalid as one of the presenters. Dr Salwa is a wildlife researcher from the UBD's Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER).

The webinar will focus on 2 major themes:
a) Identifying Important Hornbill Landscapes in Borneo particularly Sarawak & Brunei
b) Identifying impacts of climate change on Helmeted Hornbill habitats in Borneo.

We would like to thank Associate Professor Dr Martin Dančák and Dr Michal Hronés from Palacký University, Czech Republic for their invaluable article contributions to our book, Belalong: Under the Canopy. Both researchers are pictured here with Associate Professor Dr Rahayu Sukri, the book’s editor, and Dr Salwana Jaafar, the book’s editorial assistant.

Associate Professor Dr Martin Dančák and Dr Michal Hronés are currently in Brunei conducting fieldwork in collaboration with Dr Rahayu and Dr Salwana. Their long-running collaborative research on Brunei’s flora, including at Belalong, has resulted in novel discoveries of several new mycoheterotrophic species, some of which are highlighted in this book. Their research has been unveiling unique plants in Brunei’s pristine forests and showcasing our incredible biodiversity to the world!

Your expertise has greatly enriched this book, and we look forward to more exciting findings!

Today's IBER Seminar Series featured an engaging talk by Dr Milan Řezáč from the Crop Research Institute, Czech Republic, exploring the fascinating world of carnivorous plants and their unique inhabitants.

His study explored the disappearing diversity of spiders, known as nepenthebionts, living in the traps of Nepenthes plants in Borneo. He highlighted the intricate adaptations of these spiders, their role within the microhabitats of Nepenthes traps, and the conservation challenges facing these remarkable ecosystems.

The talk also shed light on innovative research methods, including morphological and genetic analyses, aimed at uncovering new spider species and understanding their evolutionary pathways.

Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Resea

Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER) including UBD Botanical Research Centre (UBD BRC) hosted visitors from the Faculty of Tropical Forestry, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

The academic visit with 37 students was part of the International and Regional Forestry Course, led by Encik Musri Hj. Ismenyah, course coordinator and lecturer, and Encik Erwan Silin, Assistant scientific officer from UMS.

The visit included a sharing session by Dr Salwa Abd Khalid, Deputy Director, IBER on the research, education and outreach activities of IBER. Following this, the visitors were given a guided tour of UBD BRC botanic garden.

This is the third year that we have received UMS delegates to IBER. We thank UMS for their visit and look forward to future visits and further collaborations between our two institutions.

Hübner's wasp moth
Amata huebneri

You may be frightened of this insect which looks like a wasp. It is a moth trying to mimic a wasp to frighten off predators. As moths, they do not have jaws and can't even bite an attacker.

It is found from the Indo Australian tropics to northern Australia. Adults are black with yellow bands across the abdomen, and transparent windows in the wings. It is a wasp mimic. The larvae have been recorded feeding on rice (Oryza sativa) and the weed Mikania micrantha.

The hübner's wasp moth can emit ultrasonic clicks, confusing bat predation through a remarkable acoustic trick that confuses the bat’s echolocation.

Our UBD graduates from the Faculty of Science participated in the Brunei Darussalam Maritime Week 2024 at the Bridex Hall in Jerudong, organised by the Maritime and Port Authority of Brunei Darussalam

The graduates, Lee Huan Chiao, Syakirah Azmey and Ahmad Fahmi Rozaini exhibited their marine research projects at the event. The Guest of Honour was Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamshary Bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha, Minister of Transport and Infocommunications.

Dr Salwa Khalid attended the Women of the Future dinner, hosted by the British High Commissioner, Her Excellency Ms. Alexandra McKenzie, on 18th November 2024.

The Women of the Future Programme is a movement focused on collaboration and kindness in the workplace, galvanising a community of women to work together as a new generation of talent across multiple sectors and industries.

The dinner celebrated Brunei’s changemakers including this year’s shortlisted nominees for the Women of the Future Awards – Sally, Sarinah, and Basma.

Associate Professor Dr Rahayu Sukri from the UBD's Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER) attended the 10th Meeting of the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity Scientific Advisory Committee (ACB SAC) on 08 November 2024.

Held at the National University of Singapore following the 2024 Biodiversity Science Forum, the annual meeting of the ACB SAC included updates on ACB Programmes and discussions on future projects.

AP Dr Rahayu Sukri has represented Brunei Darussalam on the ACB SAC since 2022 and works closely with the ACB to support biodiversity and conservation initiatives in the country.

Professor Dato Haji Mohamed Abd Majid is in UBD as an invited speaker and facilitator for the 'Symposium on Plants in Islamic Civilization' and workshop on 'Ethnobotany People and Plants Connection'.

During his time in UBD he held a series of meetings, field outings and continues to provide valuable insight and advice for the Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER) including UBD Botanical Research Centre (UBD BRC) on ongoing and planned projects and initiatives.

Honoured to represent Brunei Darussalam, Associate

Honoured to represent Brunei Darussalam, Associate Professor Dr Rahayu Sukri, Dr Rafhiah Kahar and Dr Salwana Jaafar from the Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER) were at the 2024 Biodiversity Science Forum in Singapore.

The forum, held from 6-7 November, spotlights Southeast Asia's habitats of heritage — peatlands, mangroves, and freshwater swamps — hosted by the Asia Research Institute, Department of History, and Department of Biological Sciences at the National University of Singapore (NUS), with support from the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB).

Dr Rafhiah shared her research on freshwater fish biodiversity in Brunei Darussalam, AP Dr Rahayu presented ecological and conservation insights on the Badas Peat Swamps, and Dr Salwana presented her ongoing research on microbial community dynamics and carbon cycling in Brunei’s peat swamp forests.

A huge thanks to NUS and the ACB for inviting our researchers and making this exchange of knowledge possible.

Today marks the closing of the UBD Incubation Fest

Today marks the closing of the UBD Incubation Festival INCUFEST2024 organised by Office of AVC IEED.

IBER exhibit showcased the ongoing natural products and medicinal plants research which have the potential to be commercially developed into products. The medicinal plants projects were presented by graduate students, Muhammad Nukman Hj M Marali, NurAziyah Sofriazmi and Raudhatun Naemah Samsul.

We look forward to further developments within this sub-sector. We thank the Office of AVC IEED for the opportunity.
