Hübner's wasp moth
Amata huebneri

You may be frightened of this insect which looks like a wasp. It is a moth trying to mimic a wasp to frighten off predators. As moths, they do not have jaws and can't even bite an attacker.

It is found from the Indo Australian tropics to northern Australia. Adults are black with yellow bands across the abdomen, and transparent windows in the wings. It is a wasp mimic. The larvae have been recorded feeding on rice (Oryza sativa) and the weed Mikania micrantha.

The hübner's wasp moth can emit ultrasonic clicks, confusing bat predation through a remarkable acoustic trick that confuses the bat’s echolocation.

Our UBD graduates from the Faculty of Science participated in the Brunei Darussalam Maritime Week 2024 at the Bridex Hall in Jerudong, organised by the Maritime and Port Authority of Brunei Darussalam

The graduates, Lee Huan Chiao, Syakirah Azmey and Ahmad Fahmi Rozaini exhibited their marine research projects at the event. The Guest of Honour was Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamshary Bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha, Minister of Transport and Infocommunications.

Dr Salwa Khalid attended the Women of the Future dinner, hosted by the British High Commissioner, Her Excellency Ms. Alexandra McKenzie, on 18th November 2024.

The Women of the Future Programme is a movement focused on collaboration and kindness in the workplace, galvanising a community of women to work together as a new generation of talent across multiple sectors and industries.

The dinner celebrated Brunei’s changemakers including this year’s shortlisted nominees for the Women of the Future Awards – Sally, Sarinah, and Basma.

Associate Professor Dr Rahayu Sukri from the UBD's Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER) attended the 10th Meeting of the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity Scientific Advisory Committee (ACB SAC) on 08 November 2024.

Held at the National University of Singapore following the 2024 Biodiversity Science Forum, the annual meeting of the ACB SAC included updates on ACB Programmes and discussions on future projects.

AP Dr Rahayu Sukri has represented Brunei Darussalam on the ACB SAC since 2022 and works closely with the ACB to support biodiversity and conservation initiatives in the country.

Professor Dato Haji Mohamed Abd Majid is in UBD as an invited speaker and facilitator for the 'Symposium on Plants in Islamic Civilization' and workshop on 'Ethnobotany People and Plants Connection'.

During his time in UBD he held a series of meetings, field outings and continues to provide valuable insight and advice for the Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER) including UBD Botanical Research Centre (UBD BRC) on ongoing and planned projects and initiatives.

We thank Prof Dato for his continuous guidance.

Honoured to represent Brunei Darussalam, Associate Professor Dr Rahayu Sukri, Dr Rafhiah Kahar and Dr Salwana Jaafar from the Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER) were at the 2024 Biodiversity Science Forum in Singapore.

The forum, held from 6-7 November, spotlights Southeast Asia's habitats of heritage — peatlands, mangroves, and freshwater swamps — hosted by the Asia Research Institute, Department of History, and Department of Biological Sciences at the National University of Singapore (NUS), with support from the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB).

Dr Rafhiah shared her research on freshwater fish biodiversity in Brunei Darussalam, AP Dr Rahayu presented ecological and conservation insights on the Badas Peat Swamps, and Dr Salwana presented her ongoing research on microbial community dynamics and carbon cycling in Brunei’s peat swamp forests.

A huge thanks to NUS and the ACB for inviting our researchers and making this exchange of knowledge possible.

Today marks the closing of the UBD Incubation Fest

Today marks the closing of the UBD Incubation Festival INCUFEST2024 organised by Office of AVC IEED.

IBER exhibit showcased the ongoing natural products and medicinal plants research which have the potential to be commercially developed into products. The medicinal plants projects were presented by graduate students, Muhammad Nukman Hj M Marali, NurAziyah Sofriazmi and Raudhatun Naemah Samsul.

We look forward to further developments within this sub-sector. We thank the Office of AVC IEED for the opportunity.

We are excited that our retired IBER colleague, Dyg Zamiah binti Mohidin received a plaque in appreciation of her 31 years of dedicated service to UBD. Dyg Zamiah recently retired in August 2024.

As part of the one day workshop titled ‘Ethnobot

As part of the one day workshop titled ‘Ethnobotany: people and plants connection’, a hands-on live session was held in the afternoon which was facilitated by Assistant Curator & Botanists of the UBD Botanical Research Centre (UBD BRC), Dayang Nurul Hazlina Haji Zaini and Awg Mohammad Amiruddin Ruslan.

Dayang Nurul Hazlina’s session was titled ‘Plant specimen preparation for herbarium specimens’. During her session, Dyg Nurul Hazlina emphasised that plant collection and preservation are fundamental practices in botany, ecology, and conservation. These practices play a crucial role in understanding plant diversity, protecting ecosystems, and advancing scientific knowledge. Participants were given the opportunity to carry out plant collections at the Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Herbal Garden and mounting of oven dried specimens for storage. Awg Mohammad Amiruddin’s session introduced participants to several plant propagation techniques, focusing on stem cutting and division methods. The live demonstration guides participants through the propagation methods and its key benefits.

The workshop session ended with closing remarks and certificate presentation to workshop facilitators and participants presented by Yang Mulia Dr. Haji Awang Mohammed Hussain bin Pehin Penyurat Haji Awang Ahmad, Director of the Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah. Dr Hussein Taha, Director of the Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research presented certificates to symposium exhibitors and symposium coordinators.

A one-day workshop titled ‘Ethnobotany: people a

A one-day workshop titled ‘Ethnobotany: people and plants connection’ co-organised by the Universiti Brunei Darussalam Botanical Research Centre (UBD BRC) of the Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research, UBD in collaboration with the Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah was held on the 5th November at the Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.

This workshop aims to provide a learning experience on plant identification and classification, hands-on training on botanical specimen preparation in addition to facilitating discussion among participants. The outcomes of the workshop will contribute towards conservation efforts and promote sustainable use of plant resources in Brunei Darussalam.

The morning session was facilitated by Professor Dato Haji Mohamed Abd Majid, Emeritus Professor and Honorary Advisor, Rimba Ilmu Botanical Gardens, Universiti Malaya. His session gave an introduction to ethnobotany and the indigenous uses of plants in the context of food, medicine and the importance of documentation for the preservation of this knowledge that is under threat of disappearing. The session also emphasised the importance of accurate taxonomic identification and classification of these plants. The workshop was attended by participants from government agencies and higher education institutions.

The speakers at the Symposium on Plants in Islamic Civilisation held on the 4th November delivered different perspectives which highlighted the vital role of plants in Islamic Civilisation.

The plenary session speaker, Professor Dato Hj Mohamed Abd Majid, Emeritus Professor and Honorary Advisor, Rimba Ilmu Botanical Gardens, Universiti Malaya, delivered a talk titled ‘The Kapor (Dryobalanops aromatica) of Borneo; Its Relationship to ‘Kafura’ of Al Qur’an and Its Role In Brunei History’. This paper gave an insight on the role of Camphor which attracted early Arab traders to Borneo and played an important role in opening diplomatic and commercial relations with other countries within the region.

Dr Norhayati Ahmad from the Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER) and symposium coordinator, delivered a paper titled ‘An Overview of Contemporary Ethnobotany in Light of Scientific Findings, Linking Traditional Knowledge with Modern Science’. This paper shared the importance of preserving ethnobotanical knowledge and discussed how some of the traditional knowledge of plants has advanced and made substantial contributions to modern science and technology.

The two other speakers from Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah were Puan Hajah Siti Norhayatty Haji Morni, Curator of Conservation, Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah with paper titled ‘The Herbal Garden Initiative: Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah’s Role In Re-Introducing The Various Benefits of Botanical Plants’ and Haji Muhammad Ruzaini Haji Mohd Daud, Archaeology Officer presented a paper titled ‘Excavating The Past, Understanding The Present And Preparing The Future’.

On 4 November 2024, IBER exhibit titled ‘Harness

On 4 November 2024, IBER exhibit titled ‘Harnessing natural products resources for sustainable commercialization’ was exhibited at the Opening Ceremony of the UBD Incubation Festival Incufest 2024 organised by the Office of AVC IEED.

The exhibit featured natural products resources as potential sub sectors for bio-prospecting which can be further explored.

Under the applied research activities within the UBD Botanical Research Centre (UBD BRC), two projects currently carried out under Dr Norhayati Ahmad, which are related to the biological properties of two medicinal plants Anisophyllea disticha and Asplenium nidus, were featured as having the potential to be further developed into products for commercialization.

The projects were presented by MSc students, Muhammad Nukman Hj M Marali and Nur 'Aziyah Sofriazmi.

The Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER) in collaboration with the Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (BKISHHB) co-organised the Symposium on Plants in Islamic Civilisation on the 4th November 2024. The symposium was officiated by Yang Mulia Dr Hajah May Fa’ezah Binti Haji Ahmad Ariffin, Permanent Secretary (Economy, Trade and Industry) at the Ministry Of Finance And Economy held at the Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah. In attendance at the event was Vice Chancellor UBD, Dr Hazri Hj Kifle.

The opening ceremony included a plenary session delivered by Professor Dato Haji Mohamed Abd Majid, Emeritus Professor and Honorary Advisor, Rimba Ilmu Botanical Gardens, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia on “The Kapor (Dryobalanops aromatica) of Borneo; Its Relationship to ‘Kafura’ of Al Qur’an and Its Role In Brunei History”. This was followed by a tour of the Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah herbal garden and an exhibition showcasing UBD Botanical Research Centre research posters, promotional videos, botanical artwork by local artists and Dynamik Technologies izi.travel app of the UBD BRC Al-Hadeeqah Al-Mubaarakah zone, IBER and UBD BRC education and outreach programmes.

The objective of the symposium was to create awareness and provide a platform for engagement and knowledge sharing on the importance of plants and its diverse role in Islamic civilization.

Following the opening ceremony, seminar presentations were delivered by speakers from IBER and BKISHHB. Tours of the UBD Botanical Research Centre and BKISHHB followed as part of the afternoon programme.

In collaboration with the Forestry Department, this visit offered our guests an immersive introduction to Ulu Temburong National Park (UTNP) and its valuable ecosystems.

IBER representatives, led by Dr Salwana Md Jaafar, shared insights into UTNP’s biodiversity and ongoing research projects, highlighting the park’s critical role in conservation and scientific discovery.

On 22nd October 2024, the Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER) welcomed students from Sekolah Rendah Selangan, Temburong to the UBD Botanical Research Centre (UBD BRC) for an exciting Nature Classroom session.

The morning was filled with discovery as students participated in a scavenger hunt, exploring interesting plants at the UBD Botanical Research Centre (BRC) Greenhouse. The second activity introduced the students to the world of birdwatching, where the students learned the basics of identifying and recording bird characteristics. With binoculars in hand, students ventured outdoors to spot birds, gaining new skills in observation and appreciation for Brunei’s rich biodiversity. 🦜🌱

Thank you to Sekolah Rendah Selangan for making this a memorable day of learning and exploration!
