The IBER Seminar Series highlighted UBD’s continui The IBER Seminar Series highlighted UBD’s continuing contributions to biodiversity research in Ulu Temburong.

Associate Professor Dr Rahayu Sukri shared milestones in biodiversity studies at KBFSC, where many species new to science were first recorded. Her talk underscored KBFSC’s importance in driving long-term research on forest ecology and biodiversity, and its contributions to national conservation and climate action.

Dr Salwa Khalid introduced the newly launched Mammals of Ulu Temburong guidebook, compiling findings from fieldwork and camera trap surveys. She discussed the ecological roles of mammals, their conservation status, and the importance of sustained research for Brunei’s wildlife management.

Dr Roshanizah Rosli presented highlights from the Flora of Ulu Temburong, featuring diverse plant forms from towering dipterocarps to rare endemics. Her talk emphasized long-term botanical research, IUCN Red List assessments, and threats to the park’s unique flora.

Held in conjunction with the launch of the IBER Field Guide Series, the seminar celebrated science, collaboration, and conservation at Ulu Temburong, Brunei’s green jewel.

On 13 November 2025, Universiti Brunei Darussalam’ On 13 November 2025, Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER) successfully launched two books and posters from the IBER Field Guide Series – “Mammals of Ulu Temburong” and “Flora of Ulu Temburong”. The event was held in conjunction with UBD’s 40th Anniversary celebrations, and officiated by UBD’s Vice Chancellor, Dr Hazri bin Haji Kifle. In attendance at the event were the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of BIBD, the Acting Director of the Forestry Department, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, senior officials from UBD, and invited guests.

The event featured a keynote presentation by Associate Professor Dr Rahayu Sukri, Project Lead for the IBER Field Guide Series and Principal Investigator of the Kuala Belalong Biodiversity Conservation Research Project, which serves as the scientific foundation for the field guides.

Through long-term studies conducted at the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre and within the Ulu Temburong National Park by IBER researchers, the “Mammals of Ulu Temburong” and “Flora of Ulu Temburong” books and posters highlight the rich flora and fauna of Ulu Temburong, one of Brunei’s most pristine and ecologically significant rainforest areas. Designed to provide accessible references for a wide audience, the books and posters feature selected species of importance and provide information on their ecology and conservation status.

Thank you to UBD (@ubdbuzz) and Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (@bibdbrunei) for funding the production of the books, and to the Forestry Department (@forestry.brunei ) for supporting IBER’s research activities in the Ulu Temburong National Park.

We are excited to share a new paper published in P We are excited to share a new paper published in Phytomedicine Plus on the healing properties of Curcuma zedoaria roots and Dillenia excelsa leaves.

The paper was co-authored by Dr Fatin Sauli, Dr Fairuzeta Ja'afar and Dr Hartini Yasin from the Chemical Sciences, Faculty of Science, UBD, Professor Masayoshi Arai from the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Osaka, Dr Titiruetai Duongwichitrukul and Professor Preecha Phuwapraisirisan from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University, and Dr Norhayati Ahmad from IBER, UBD.

The paper describes the antioxidant interaction between C.zedoaria and isolated compounds from D. excelsa extract. Seven compounds were successfully isolated from D. excelsa for the first time and displayed distinctive interactions when combined with C. zeodaria extracts using the different antioxidant approaches. The findings highlight the potential for development of these plants in therapeutic applications and natural antioxidant formulations.
Wildlife of Brunei Darussalam: Southern Pig-tailed Wildlife of Brunei Darussalam: Southern Pig-tailed Macaque (Macaca nemestrina)

The Southern Pig-tailed Macaque (Macaca nemestrina) is a medium-sized primate native to the forests of Southeast Asia. It is named after its short, pig-like tail, which is often carried in an upright position. These macaques are highly social and live in groups with complex hierarchies. They are primarily terrestrial but are also agile climbers, foraging for fruits, seeds, and small animals. Due to habitat loss and degradation, the Sunda Pig-tailed Macaque is listed as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.

We are proud to share that our Universiti Brunei D We are proud to share that our Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) students from the Faculty of Science —
🔹 Mr Harry Lik Hock Lau
🔹 Ms Nur Nabaahah Roslan
🔹 Ms Nur Amirah S. Yussof
🔹 Ms Nur Dina Reshma Jali
— have successfully published two papers in the international journal 'Reaction Kinetics, Mechanisms and Catalysis'.

Their research projects focus on the photocatalytic degradation of pharmaceutical pollutants, specifically antibiotics, using either strontium titanate or anatase titania nanoparticles, activated by 365-nm UV light. These studies contribute to the growing body of research addressing the removal of emerging pharmaceutical contaminants from wastewater and aquatic environments — a critical environmental and public health concern.

The projects were led by Associate Professor Dr. Anwar Usman from UBD, in collaboration with other researchers including from Indonesia and Thailand.

We extend our sincere congratulations to the students on this outstanding achievement. Your dedication and contribution to environmental science are commendable.

On 30th September 2025, Universiti Brunei Darussal On 30th September 2025, Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER), in collaboration with Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP) and the Forestry Department, successfully launched Badas Tree Planting Phase 2!

Held in conjunction with UBD’s 40th Anniversary, this tree planting initiative is supported by BSP as part of its Social Investment initiatives and directly contributes to national reforestation efforts championed by the Forestry Department. Present at Jalan Badas to launch the project was Dayang Suriani Binti Garip, Communications and External Affairs Manager of BSP.

The launching event gathered over 50 volunteers from BSP, the Forestry Department, Brunei Climate Change Office and UBD, truly embodying the spirit of collaboration for Brunei’s forests. A total of 200 saplings of the endangered Dryobalanops rappa, locally known as Kapur paya, were planted. This native tree species, found only in Borneo, was selected based on successful outcomes from IBER’s reforestation research. The planted saplings will contribute towards UBD’s Rooting for the Future initiative.

Over the next three days, volunteers from UBD, schools and the public will join this citizen science project, contributing to the protection of Brunei’s unique peat swamp forest and supporting the nation’s forest cover goals under the Brunei National Climate Change Policy. Volunteers will also witness firsthand the thriving growth of Rubroshorea albida saplings planted in 2021 during the Badas Tree Planting Project - a living reminder that restoration flourishes through time, patience, and collective effort.
